How To Protect Yourself from Moving Fraud?

Preparing for your move can be stressful enough without the unwanted stress of moving fraud. Here are some steps on how to protect yourself and your valuables when moving.

If a mover does not offer to do an onsite inspection of your household items and only corresponds with you via phone or email, this may be an early indication of fraud.

Federal regulations require movers to provide their clients with a copy of the FMCSA's Ready to Move brochure as well as the "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move" booklet so be sure to ask about it. These have basic information about the documents the mover will provide you to sign as well as explains your rights in case your household goods are lost.

If the mover does not provide a written estimate, or asks for a large deposit amount or to pay in cash, that's also a red flag as well so be sure to check out the mover's website to make sure that they have a local address, insurance and registration information.
